After returning to Wittenberg it is left-overs from the barbeque, even better than on the first day. Afterwards hot wine and a slice of traditional Stollen will end the day in the small bar of what was once one of the servant rooms in the castle. B D
Dec.9 – Today we leave Bad Dueben to drive to the Nutcracker town of Seiffen in the Erzgebirge mountains, a Christmas town like no other. In the evening we will drive to a historic stage coach station in a forest on what used to be the Salt Road, where caravans would transport salt from the salt mines in Salzburg to the north of Germany. Dinner tonight is a Neinerala, a traditional Christmas dinner that was served in the mountains around Seiffen on Christmas Eve. B D
Dec.12 – After a leisurely breakfast we will drive to the Saxony’s beautiful baroque capital, Dresden. En route we will stop at the Castle Coldiz, where allied officers were imprisoned during WWII. The castle is now a museum displaying the incredible escapes the allied officers undertook, so incredible and ingenious that even the German guards admired them for it and often looked the other way. After leaving the castle we will continue on to Dresden where your hotel is located right across from the stunning Frauenkirche Cathedral on the prestigious Neuer Markt, the new market square – not so new, though, as it dates back a few centuries. The only Christmas decoration here is a huge lighted Christmas Tree set up in the middle of the square. So imposing it is, it’s all the Christmas decoration that is needed. In the evening we will dine in a congenial pub just a short walk from the hotel. B D
