The Sound of Violins in Mittenwald and Cremona

Available throughout most of the year for individual departures.

This is an extra-ordinary music tour for lovers of violin music, music teachers and students. Limited to 12, the group will stay for five days in the beautiful Bavarian town of Mittenwald, home to violin makers since the 17th century. Late in 1600, Matthias Klotz, a native of Mittenwald went to study violin making in Padua and Cremona, a town that was renowned then for perhaps the greatest master of violin making Nicolo Amati. When he returned to Mittenwald he opened his own workshop and later founded a school to teach the making of violins. On our tour participants will visit one of these workshops to learn about violin making and to listen to one of the violins being played, perhaps even have a “hands on” session of playing one of these beautiful instruments. The group will also visit Mittenwald’s fascinating violin Museum, climb a mountain aboard a cable car to see cows with bells on graze in the meadows, take a day excursion to a lake at the foot of Germany’s highest  mountain and enjoy the food and drink of Bavaria.

After Mittenwald Participants travel to Cremona home to Italy’s, and the world’s, most famous violin makers who were referred to as luthiers, makers of stringed instruments. Nicolo Amati and his pupils Antonio Strativari and Guiseppe Guaneri all studied and worked in Cremona. While in Cremona the group will have a private tour of the Academia Cremonesis, the school of violin making where they attend a live session of students learning to make violin’s. They will also visit the amazing Violin Museum located in a stunning  16th century Palace, attend a concert and learn all about Cremona’s history on a private tour of the city. Participants will stay in the historic center of Cremona and enjoy the food and the wine of this region of Italy. A special treat is a day excursion to Flor
